Chau Introduces Legislation to Combat Misinformation Online

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D–Monterey Park) introduced legislation that would empower Californians to better assess what social media platforms are doing to address the rampant spread of misinformation.

Governor Newsom Signs Law That Aims to Save Children from Hot Cars AB 2717 Grants Immunity to Good Samaritans Who Break Windows to Rescue Kids

(Sacramento) – California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2717 into law on September 30, a bill authored by Assembly Member Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park). The new law will provide people with immunity from liability for damage to cars and trucks when someone is rescuing children age 6 and younger trapped in a vehicle. The law takes effect on January 1, 2021.

The incursion of facial recognition technology in our everyday lives is already present, but we have few tools to discover or limit its use.

Last year, a California law enforcement officer was browsing through a social media platform and came across a missing child’s photo, posted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. After taking a screenshot, the officer fed the image into facial recognition system that returned a list of online sex ads featuring the missing girl.
