Assemblymember Mike Fong’s Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order Seeking to Close the U.S. Department of Education

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA  Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, released the following statement on President Trump’s executive order, seeking to close the U.S. Department of Education:

“This action by President Trump reflects a lack of any fundamental understanding of how the U.S. Department of Education operates. Financial aid and grant opportunities are merely a fraction of the necessary support the U.S. Department of Education provides for our nation’s students. A disinvestment in this department is a disinvestment in our students and the future of our nation. California must continue to fight for our students and their right to a quality education. I am committed to working with my legislative colleagues to ensure California’s students do not suffer.”
