SACRAMENTO, CA –Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement to fire 1,300 of its workers:
“This is an attack on education and the future of our nation. It is inconceivable how this attempt to diminish a department, which promotes educational opportunity through grants and financial aid, would in any way help our students, especially our most vulnerable. I vehemently oppose this action by the U.S. Department of Education and its failure to support our students, teachers and families. This will have huge implications on our students’ civil rights and their ability to pursue higher education. I support California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, in challenging this unlawful action against these employees and education in the United States.”
