SOUTH PASADENA, CA – Assemblymember Mike Fong (D – Alhambra), in partnership with the Contractors State Licensing Board and the City of South Pasadena, hosted a Senior Scam Stopper & Resource Fair at the South Pasadena Senior Center. Over 100 local seniors heard presentations and visited with government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
“Unfortunately, senior citizens are too often targeted by scammers and fraudsters. But the best line of defense are informed seniors– that’s why we are here today, to make sure that seniors have the crucial information they need so they don’t fall victim. Thank you to the state agencies and community organizations for offering resources, and to all the seniors for making the time to attend,” said Assemblymember Fong.
The packed event featured presentations from the Contractors State Licensing Board, the California Department of Financial Protection & Innovation, the California Department of Insurance, and the nonprofit law firm Bet Tzedek. 13 other agencies were on hand to provide resources and other materials.
Top Tips to Avoid Scams:
- Be wary of phone calls or emails from unknown sources. Government agencies will not contact you for sensitive personal information, such as banking information.
- Take your time when reviewing and signing contracts. If you feel pressured to sign and commit to something right away, it is likely a scam.
- Always go to the source. Contact the government agency or financial institution directly if someone contacts you claiming they represent the organization.
