SACRAMENTO, CA – This legislative session, Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra) authored a number of bills that reached Governor Newsom’s desk. As Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and Chair of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus, Assemblymember Fong prioritizes policies that support student access and success, as well as equity for vulnerable communities.

Legislation by Assemblymember Mike Fong on the Governor’s desk include the following:
- AB 323 (Strong Workforce Program Paid Internship) - Authorizes California Community Colleges Strong Workforce Program funds to be used to provide students with paid work-based learning, such as apprenticeships, internships and externships, to increase employability and employment opportunities.
- AB 413 (Language Access for Housing Outreach) - Requires the Housing and Community Development Department to review and determine whether any of its guidelines explain services to the public, and translate such guideline into certain non-English languages.
- AB 695 (Continuity of Education: Deported Students) - Establishes the CA Community Colleges Access and Continuity for Deported Students Act, establishing a process to enable California Community Colleges students to continue their education online if they voluntarily or involuntarily leave the United States due to immigration enforcement or threat of immigration enforcement.
- AB 893 (Campus Development Zones) - Streamlines mixed-income housing development on certain commercially zoned properties within a one-half mile radius of CSUs, UCs, and California Community Colleges, and expands eligibility for affordable units to lower income students, faculty, and staff.
- AB 1028 (CA Community Colleges: Part-Time Faculty) - Requires California Community College Districts to comply with existing collective bargaining agreements when terminating a part-time employee.
- AB 1098 (CA Education Interagency Council) - Establishes the California Education Interagency Council and office to align California’s education and workforce systems. This proposal is one of the components of the Governor’s Master Plan for Career Education.
- AB 1155 (Law School Externship) - Requires all law schools to allow students to accept compensation from externship sites while concurrently earning academic course credit.
