You Served, You Earned


If you served or are serving in any branch of the U.S. Military, you are a veteran — even if you have not seen combat. As a veteran, you and
your family may be eligible for benefits. It’s America’s way of saying“thank you for your service.” To learn more, call toll-free 1-844-SERV-VET (737-8838).


Compensation or Pension

  • If you are at least 10% disabled because of your military service, you are eligible for monthly compensation from the VA
  • If you are a wartime veteran with limited income, and are permanently disabled or 65 years or older, you may be eligible for a monthly pension from the VA

Education and Training*

The VA pays benefits to eligible veterans and servicemembers while they are in an approved education or training program:

  • Active Duty Service: Persons with 90+ days of active duty on or after 9/11/01 are generally eligible for benefits under post-9/11 GI
    Bill. Persons first entering active duty after 6/30/85 are generally eligible under Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB)
  • Reserve Guard Service: MGIB-Selected Reserve available to those who signed a 6-year commitment after 6/30/85, actively drilling
    and in good standing with unit. Reserve Educational Assistance Program is for those activated under Federal authority for a
    contingency operation and served 90 continuous days or more after 9/11/01

The VA provides a number of healthcare services for veterans:

  • Hospital, outpatient medical, dental, pharmacy and prosthetic services
  • Domiciliary, nursing home and community-based residential care
  • Sexual trauma counseling
  • Specialized healthcare for female veterans
  • Health and rehabilitation programs for homeless veterans
  • Readjustment counseling
  • Alcohol and drug dependency treatment
  • Medical evaluation for disorders associated with military service in the Gulf War, exposure to Agent Orange, radiation and other
    environmental hazards

The VA also provides free healthcare for veterans who served in a theater of combat operations after 11/11/98 for any illness possibly
related to their service in that theater.

Home Loans

The California Department of Veterans Affairs and the VA offer a number of home loan services to eligible veterans, some military
personnel and certain surviving spouses, including low-cost/lowinterest loans, home loan guarantees, refinancing, and special grants
for certain disabled veteran and military personnel to adapt or acquire housing suitable for their needs.

Life Insurance

The VA offers a variety of life insurance options for veterans and servicemembers.

State Veteran Services

California offers a number of unique benefits for qualified veterans including discounted hunting and fishing licenses, specialized license plates, a Distinguished Veteran Park Pass to the state park system, residency in long-term care facilities, and much more. Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment*

The VA provides assistance to veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, obtain and maintain suitable employment.
For veterans with serious service-related disabilities, the VA also offers services to improve their ability to live as independently as possible.



The VA offers certain benefits and services to honor our nation’s deceased veterans:

  • Headstones and Markers
  • Burial Flag
  • Reimbursement of Burial Expenses (amounts vary)
  • Burial in a National Cemetery


A comprehensive healthcare program in which the VA shares the cost of covered healthcare services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries.

Death Pension & Parents’ DIC

Death pension is payable to some surviving spouses and children of deceased wartime veterans and is based on financial need

Parents’ DIC is payable to some surviving parents and is based on financial need

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

These monies are payable to certain survivors of servicemembers who died during active service, veterans who died from servicerelated
disabilities and certain veterans who were being paid 100% VA disability compensation at the time of death.

Educational Benefits

Dependent children of qualified disabled veterans may be eligible for fee waivers at state colleges and universities.
